Crete Diary - 1870:Hello all.  I am trying to determine the identity of a diarist who lived at
or near Crete in the late 1870s and early 1880s.  He was born on January 18,
1832 and notes his birthday faithfully each year.  He writes of being
crippled by an accident in July 1859.  He invested in real estate and might
also have managed a farm.  He speaks of "Uncle Lyman," "Uncle Reuben," and
his sister "Rox."  He was the treasurer at his church in 1879-1880, which
might have been the Crete Methodist church.  A "Rev. Reynolds" is also
mentioned.  He attended church and temperance meetings faithfully.

The diary is currently in the possession of the Berwyn Historical Society,
in which locality it was recently discovered in an old home.  Does anyone
have any ideas as to the identity of this diarist?

SWEDE HILL SETTLEMENT: I am looking for information on the "Swede Hill Settlement" between Harvard and Yale and 87th and 89th street along Holland road.  The area would have been settled during the 1880's and 1890's. Some common names would have been Olson, Nelson, Carlson.  The settlement probably would have initially been considered to be along Holland road and it probably predated the expansion of the Belt Railway and the Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad and predated the elevation of these railroads. For Census purposes it appears that the area was considered part of Roseland, perhaps because the main road
at the time, Holland Road, became Michigan Road at about 99th street.

SCHAEFER: I'm looking for information on Karl SCHAEFER, my great-grandfather, originally from Baltimore, Maryland. He died about 1910. His first wife was Julia KEMPF. He left Baltimore and probably married again. I have no knowledge of his address, somewhere in or about Chicago. He had a son, Karl Charles (b. April 24, 1865) by Julia KEMPF.  Karl Charles was married to Katherine LEIDIG (b. Feb 6, 1870, d. Dec 31, 1954). I would love to know more about him and his Chicago family.

STECH, ARPAIA, HAJEK, YONKMAN:My name is Patrick Lernout. I live in Waregem-Belgium at about one mile from the US Flanders Field military cemetery. As I am interested in the history of World War 1, this cemetery has my special attention.  I started to write a book  about the soldiers buried here. So I am looking for as much information about all those men. I think that would be a great tribute for them, who gave their lives for the freedom of our country.
In the cemetery are 4 soldiers from Cook County James Michael STECH (Berwyn – South Cicago), Nicolas ARPAIA (Chicago), Joseph HAJEK (Chicago) and Jacob YONKMAN (Chicago). Should anyone have information/pictures about them or some history, addresses, etc … ?

PETERS:  I am looking for information on Madeleine PETERS and her father, Claus Johann (John) PETERS.  Claus was born in Schleswig-Holstein,Germany/Denmark.  He married Anna Marie KRUSE in Mokena, Will Co., in 1874.  They later moved to Chicago and had their 3 children there.  Madeleine, Claus' sister, lived in Chicago.  She married Henry H. BROWN.  According to a family letter, Madeleine died in 1901 and was buried in Green Garden, Will Co.  It says on the headstone that she was preceded in death by her brother, Claus (also referred to as John).  We have very little info. on John or his parents.  We are trying to go through John's sister, Madeleine, to get info. on their parents. If anyone can give us state census info, city directory info., or a possible location of this grave in Green Garden, I'd so appreciate it!  I'd take suggestions on how to get these kinds of info. also.

NORMAN: Have picture of mother (b. 1913 in Decatur, IL) and on the back it has her name and Peotone.  She appears to be between the age of 8-11. (She got married at 13 in MO).  I believe that they were living in that areas perhaps 1925-1929.  Family name could have been James R. NORMAN, Robert NORMAN, Bob NORMAN.  Her name was Daisy.
Have an entry in book that states the following:  Robert NORMAN was run over by a car May 11, 1929 in Kankakee.  Looking for possible newspaper to contact to find article.
