JONES, Merle Kirkman: Kokomo-Howard County (IN) Public Library seeks information on
Merle Kirkman Jones, violinist/composer b. Kokomo in Dec. 1879; moved to Chicago area ca. 1902-3;
married there Frank JONES and made it her future base of operations. We believe she d. Jan. 1977
in Blue Island, as there is a Merle Jones with the correct birthdate listed in the Social Security death index;
however, the Chicago Historical Society was not able to find a death notice or other mention of her
in the Chicago Tribune. Seek obituary, interment information or anything about her musical activities.

We know from local Kokomo newspaper accounts that she was active at least into the mid-1930s.
She apparently used her maiden name, Merle Kirkman, as a composer of both vocal and instrumental music,
but her name also appears as Merle Kirkman-Jones. She seems to have had quite a bit of regional renown,
but is not found in contemporary encyclopedias of composers & musicians.

of Philip (Philippe) GAGNON, b. 15 July 1895 to Theophile and Honorine GAGNON.
His sis, Marguerite (GAGNON) FORTIER, d. 14 June 1916.

Mt. Olivet Cemetery records (on 111th St.) show that Philippe died in the Pullman Hospital
and that he was bur. 6 Aug. 1917. I have a part of a letter that says he died in the "waters
of the Calumet". Found his obituary in the 4 Aug. 1917 edition of the Chicago Daily News (at the
Newberry Library in Chicago). The obituary did not list the date of death. Philippe is not listed on the
Illinois Death Index. Are Pullman Hospital records extant?

Indiana, par Arthur (d 1950 in Kentucky) and Marguerite (d 1916 in Chicago) FORTIER,

WATERTON, BILLINGTON: Seek any living relatives of Dorothy Emily Gladys WATERTON
who married a Mr. BILLINGTON. They had a son who by 1948 was serving in the US Air Force.
The USAF cannot trace him unless I have a name and I don't. All we know is that Dorothy
settled in Chicago. She was visited by her mother Lavinia WATERTON in 1924 and by her father
Alfred WATERTON in 1935. We know he visited her in 1935 in Chicago.

We cannot find a marriage for Dorothy here in the UK or a birth cert either. She was probably born
between 1892 and 1904. We therefore need to search for a marriage for her and any births of her
children. If her son was in the USAF in 1948, the I suppose he was born ca.1920 ish.
